Meyers Foundation Seeks Director of Communications

The Meyer Foundation seeks a seasoned communications professional to serve as its Director of Communications. The Director of Communications reports to the Vice President for Programs and Communications.

Position description

Together with the President, Vice President for Programs and Communications, and other staff as required, help design overall communications strategies and programs, with a focus on persuasiveness, accuracy, and reach of materials and messages. Monitor and manage the communications strategy, workplan, and budget.

Work closely with all Meyer staff to increase the overall visibility of the organization, and ensure that the public and media receive compelling and accurate information about Meyer’s work and the work of its grantees.

Maintain and build relationships with key print and broadcast reporters to position the organization and its work. Provide background information to journalists, and, when appropriate, serve as a spokesperson for the organization; encourage and shape media coverage of Meyer and Meyer’s issues; position Meyer staff as expert resources and encourage and prepare staff and board members for media interviews and public presentations. Plan and implement regular media briefings to highlight Meyer’s programs and objectives.

Write, edit, or otherwise oversee and coordinate institutional communications, ensuring quality, consistency, and accuracy of content in annual reports, news releases, editorial briefs, letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, speeches and presentations, articles, reports and other significant communications. Write talking points and speeches for the President and other senior staff members.

Oversee and extend the Foundation’s communications work on the Internet and in other new media. Manage the design, usability, and content of the Foundation’s website. Produce a monthly electronic newsletter.

Update the staff on topics and issues relevant to the Foundation’s work, and develop mechanisms that enable staff members to inform one another of their ongoing work.

Select and supervise consultants and vendors, including printers, designers, media consultants, and photographers. Negotiate contracts and monitor and evaluate production.

Keep abreast of emerging trends in strategic uses of communications, new media, and media relations, and ensure that Meyer’s communications strategy and practices are suitably adapted.

Relevant skills and experience

At least seven years of substantive experience in media and communications. Marketing communications and media campaign experience are a plus.

Excellent writing, speaking, and editing skills.

The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree together with an understanding of media operations, news organizations, and new media technologies.

Demonstrated ability to think strategically, to develop and manage complex programs, and to turn strategy into effective action.

Proficient with the Internet and new media; ability to conceptualize web content, usability, and design.

Knowledge of nonprofits organizations is a plus.

Compensation

The salary range starts at $60,000. Actual salary will depend on the experience, skills, and knowledge of the successful applicant.
