SPIN Project Seeks Communications Strategist

COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGIST SOUGHT

The SPIN Project, a non-profit group of communications specialists who provide capacity-building to nonprofit public-interest organizations across the country, seeks a communications strategist.

The SPIN Project believes that communications and media are essential to social change and we aim to strengthen the progressive movement by helping build its communications infrastructure. We work with grassroots and national organizations advocating for a variety of progressive issues, including economic justice, environmental justice, reproductive freedom, civil rights and liberties, immigrant rights, gay and lesbian equality, and our new program area, media reform. SPIN offers public relations consulting, including comprehensive media training and intensive media strategizing and coaching. Our goal is to grow the capacity of organizations to do more effective and proactive public relations. We aim to help them get their messages out and reframe critical issues.

The communications strategist will provide strategic communications assistance through media training, coaching and strategic consulting to national and grassroots groups around the country, with a special emphasis on organizations working to shape the policies and infrastructure of our current media environment. The strategist will conduct media trainings, facilitate strategic media planning sessions, maintain ongoing relationships with community groups, provide regular communications consultation and coaching, develop and provide resources and publications, and participate in media campaigns. This position is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, ambitious, driven individual to affect change through the media. The results of your work will be almost immediately apparent as organizations reap the benefits of the SPIN Project's coaching, training and resources by seizing headlines in the press and shaping public opinion.

Qualified applicants must have a minimum of three years professional PR/communications experience, including with national and local press, or equivalent background; demonstrated success at conceiving and implementing media campaigns and press plans, including staging media events, placing stories and framing issues; at east two years experience working with political groups, including an understanding of grassroots organizational culture. The successful candidate will have the skills, the willingness and the initiative to manage projects and programs. Experience teaching media strategy and tactics preferred. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic trainer, have a bright personality that motivates activists, and have an excellent command of PR skills. Knowledge of the issues, especially media reform issues, is important.

Other important qualifications include excellent written and oral communications skills as well as teaching skills; internet literacy; the ability to work with diverse groups of people covering an array of issues; and a willingness to travel extensively.
